Serial theft and stupidity

BUSTED! I love to score one on the scammers. Although at the ghetto-trash store I work at, the scammers are usually fifteen steps ahead of Wal-Mart instead of the other way around.

The stupid ones sometimes don't bring their A-game, or else count on it being busy or getting a dumb associate up at Customer Service. Not with me.

This man came in with a big plasma TV -- $800 -- and wanted to return it. He had a receipt and it had a serial number on it.

So I open up the box and look inside. The serial number on the receipt and on the box didn't match. AND THE SERIAL NUMBER ON THE RECIEPT AND ON THE TV DON'T MATCH. So he's got a receipt with one serial number and a box and a TV with another serial number.

Buster, you've got a BIG problem. Because there's something major fishy going on.

I'm like "Sir. Did you buy two of this kind of television? Do you have another reciept at home? You can't return this television with this receipt."

First he said they had "trouble" scanning the serial number. I was like "They didn't have trouble. The serial number is on the receipt. It is right there, next to the barcode. I can see it and it says SERIAL NUMBER right next to it."

Then he says that the girl had to "type something in" when she was on the register in Electronics." I was like "If she 'typed something in' she would have typed in the serial number. Then it would be on this receipt."

I told him he couldn't return it. He won't leave. I call someone to come explain it to him again.

He gets more agitated and starts yelling. Finally, a manager comes up and is like "Sir, this is not the reciept to this television. If you want the $800 back, you're going to have to come back here with a receipt for this TV. Otherwise, we need you to leave."

The receipt was from our store, and we figure it was some sort of scam where they were purchasing TVs and also stealing them -- either out the back through Receiving or some other way. Our door greeters hardly ever check serial numbers. I don't think any of them can even spell "serial number."

I just realized that I should have checked to see when that TV he brought in was purchased -- or if it was purchased at all -- or made a manager do it. We maybe could have found out if it WAS stolen. I'll have to remember that!

I LOVE YOUR BLOG! It confirms my steadfast resolution to always shop at Target!

He probably bought one and it died after the return period. So, he bought a new one, figuring he could return the old broken one with the new receipt. Pretty common, and usually doesn't get caught, when the item doesn't have a serial number.

Log on the returns function on the computer at customer service. If you go to the screen where you enter serial number, it will tell you where and when the item was purchased if the serial number was scanned at the time it was sold. I had a printer returned with a receipt from our store, but the serial numbers didn't match. When I entered the SN off the printer into the computer it pulled up that it had been sold at Sams Club 6 months ago and we refused it.

oh yeah, someone pooped down the chemical isle in my store today!! I'm not kidding. A big 'ol turd was pushed(leaving a considerable mark) from the middle of the aisle to the skid plate. The cleaning woman almost puked trying to clean it up. So i your store isn't as "ghetto" as you think!

What is happening is that people are buying a tv, and then stealing multiples of that same tv, giving the greeter the same receipt each time.

Most likely.

That is why at Sam's Club we mark the receipt as it goes out the door.

A couple weeks ago I checked a serial number on a PSP and it was bought at Toys 'R' Us! The look on his face when I told him it was bought at Target---deer in the headlights, man.

Er... I mean Toys 'R' Us, not Target.

maybe they should transfer you to security...then you could cruise the store, check out shady stuff, and catch the low lifers...I could see that as a nifty job

You know, I actually had a previous Wal-mart employee suggest I return broken merchandise to Walmart even though I hadn't bought it there. She said you guys don't actually ck or care.

Good to see you do.

If you were really on your "A" game you would have called the cops and detained the bastard.

The things people will try for some free cash.

I had a customer today at my service desk that was pretty interesting.

I was cleaning up after a mini rush when a grossly obese woman drove by in her electric cart. We had a couple carts of items for the garden center out that we were filling to make some in the back and the woman stops next to one of the carts. She grabs one of the 30$ mini grills and sets it in her cart. The other guy there looks at me and says: "that's odd." He goes out to investigate as she drives away. I go out as well and see her stop at the milk cooler by the registers. She grabs 2 gallons of milk and arranges them in her cart. After that she heads towards the grocery entrance. She is stopped by the greeter. While she is talking to the greeter another woman comes in the doors and is handed the grill and she takes off out the door. She jumps into her running car and takes off. The other guy ran out and took down the license plate of the car. This incident just cemented the fact that most customers have no moral standards and are almost always idiots. Oh well. I hope they enjoy their grill that will probably be missing parts .

Thanks for the blog. It is outstanding. Well, time to go. Work at 9am tomorrow.

People will buy a TV at one store, take the receipt to another store, walk to Electronics, get the same TV, then "return" it at the Service Desk...BOOM free TV

Or they could be telling the truth. Shocker, I know- but some people Are actually honest. I know this was written forever ago, but for people who may read it later... I just opened and tried using a sewing machine I got as a gift 6 months ago. Upon opening it, everything seemed legit- it had the factory cellophane wrap on it, the cover over the bobbin holder that was certified inspected by the factory. Cords were tied like they were new and everything was in New type packaging. But once I tried to use it, the bobbin threads kept getting knotted and the machine would freak out, show an error code, and lock up. Upon further inspection it was apparent that the machine was used. The thread cutter was tarnished, there was a few small screws missing, and the inside was full of dust. Not from my house because it has been in the box, still taped, wrapped and between Styrofoam. So I went and got my receipt to file a Protection Plan claim, only to find out that the receipt and box serial numbers do not match the machine serial numbers. Now I'm screwed because I've been behind someone in line before with a similar problem at walmart and the employees were of course judgmental douchebags and accused her of being a thief over a $90 printer. I don't know if she was a thief but neither did they, yet they did nothing to try and help, so I'm sure that's what they will do to me. So now I'm out a $250 sewing machine - all because someone in the store was too lazy or too incompetent to check the serial numbers of another's return. They most likely accepted the person who's crappy machine I have as a return and put it on the shelf. So she got a new machine, they got their money for both machines, but I don't have a working machine or the money. How is that fair? To top it off, I bought the walmart replacement plan to cover it but can't use it because I only have the box and receipt that match serial numbers, while some sneaky skank is using the machine I paid for and bought protection for. And yes I should have opened it sooner to be sure but I should not have to. That is their job. They should have ensured it was all correct prior to putting it on the shelf. Now I'm screwed. And it really would have been no different if I took it back the same day or next day. They still would call me a thief.

I'm sure you all will still assume the worse of people but if you decide from the beginning that they are thieves, you may accuse an innocent/honest person. But the nice guys really do finish last. Things like this won't keep thieves or scammers from getting their way, it will rob hard working and honest people.

Funny,

I bought a TV, Price matches, Description matches from the receipt. However funny thing it, the Serial # on the receipt is wrong. I called the manufacturer and they verified the serial # is incorrect on the receipt and verified that Wal-Mart has a HUGE issue with this.

So who's really scamming who?

Nice now I know to remove the serial number from the tv and say it wasn't there or something like that. Way to keep the rest of the world 2 steps ahead of you.

You suck at life and get off on screwing other people over because you work at Wal-Mart and are most likely over weight. Then you assume they were stealing tv's which is probably not the case at all. It's probably one of your ignorant employees let the return got through this man bought that mistake and now has to eat it cuz you just a tad smarter then the other employees

Yep, same here. 3 days ago, we bought a 55" Samsung Crystal 4k UHD TV and last night it began acting like it was demonic, glitching and restarting in an endless reboot loop. I contacted Samsung and scheduled a service appointment since thats what other Samsung TV owners have had to do when their TVs acted the same way. The repair technician told me that since we only bought it a few days ago, the TV was defective and suggested we take it back to Walmart and exchange it. Lo and behold, the serial number on the TV didn't match the receipt, but not because the numbers were different. They didn't match because the serial number was never even entered at the time we bought it and therefore not on our receipt at all. We were told the TV had never even been sold. The worst part is that without the serial number on our receipt, our warranty is void.
