Collector's frenzy

Work at the Wal-mart has been a bit nutty/crazy lately, so I decided to treat myself to a few early "buy it for yourself" Christmas presents. :)

Now, anyone who really knows me, knows that I have three passions in life:
1) I hate stupid people.
2) I collect the ads for Absolut vodka (1,000+ and counting)
and the one relevant to this discussion 3) I collect foreign television shows.

For whatever reason, I'm intrigued by television from anywhere other than America, which is probably why my tolerance for network TV has gotten so low. Anyway.

Now, I can use the Internet like a chef uses a fine set of blades. Given enough time, I can find ANYTHING, as long as it exists on the net. I got a multi-region DVD player and went to town. I'm trying to get as many countries as possible. The list currently stands at Britain, Australia, South Africa and thanks to some truly inspired Web-surfing tonight, I was able to add New Zealand!

I could go on and on about the wonders of the stuff I've found, but it is more the thrill of the hunt that gets me going. I'm working over some DVD e-commerce site, trying to weed out all the useless "Friends" box sets or the 87th copy of "The Sopranos." I want stuff that is unique to that country.

My fondest wish is for a sitcom from Spain, called "Cuentame como paso," which explores the Franco period of Spanish history through the eyes of a normal family and its teenage children. I've also got lines on DVDs from amazon.fr and amazon.de, but since I don't speak French or German, those are pretty much useless. I want to be able to enjoy what I'm buying!

Anyway. That's my tale from tonight. Peace out!

I must say, as a Wal-Mart Associate myself I LOVE your blog. I don't remember how/when I found it, but it was during the summer. It's great to see someone else has storys similar to mine and often worse than mine. I especially agree with the black friday mess. I work third shift so we were "gaurding" the pallets most of the night and had hired flashlight cops in our story which is crazy because we're a small town. But, the girls in electronics had their own personal gaurds.

Great blog. As you love foreign TV, you might want to try Korean soap operas. The best of them are very good -- they've got fans around the world, in part because they're designed to be distributed on DVD (with subtitles!). The dramas run for three to six months, with a coherent story arc, rather like a long mini-series, with a satisfying ending. I recommend "My Sweetheart, My Darling" for a start.

So long after you post, you're probably very unlikely to ever get this. At any rate, I'm currently reading through your Blog, all of it. Great stuff!

If you like foreign TV, theyn you probably heard of Monty Python. Now, I noticed you said you didn't speak German, and that you were looking for things that re unique to that country. How about the 4 episodes Monty Python produced in German? And I'm talking about John Cleese phonetically speaking German, which is as hilarious as the jokes themselves (which are thankfully subbed).

Anyway, just though I'd drop you a line.
